a surprise report on the economy from the last quarter of last year. here now to chat about that, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. certainly a cloudy picture of the 4th quarter. we knew it was a slowdown from the 3rd quarter but not as bad as it came out. economists expected about a 1% gain. commerce department says the economy fell by a tenth of a percent in the 4th quarter. first drop since the recession. that compared to a 3.1% gain in the 3rd quarter. now, a big cut in defense spending really led to this. defense spending down 22%. biggest drop for that in 40 years. seen as a one-time factor. the january jobs report comes out on friday. and private payroll tracker adp reports that there was a gain of 192,000 jobs this month which is better than what was expected. although it did revise its december number lower from 215 to 185,000 jobs. >>> facebook reports its earnings after the closing bell today. it's expected to see better numbers than a year ago. the key figure will be mobile revenue

what would you like to change about the city's approach to developing economies? >> in the chair of the land use committee this year, and i was vice chair last year with our former chair from the bayview hunters point area. i guess i approach land use and economic development from a different perspective. i'm not against development, but i want it to be equitable so we look at the lowest income populations or even middle income populations so that residents have a strong say as development moves forward, whether it is the park ridge said development in the southern, western part of the city or even treasure island with there's many low-income families that currently live there. but it is a strong voice for the residents that currently are there. we also want to see new people moving into the city, and hopefully, we focus also on families and housing that provides better homes and home opportunities for families, but i always say that i support equitable development. i also do feel that big business and downtown interests usually dominate the discussion on developm
